We all know that most people need some sort of motivation to get them into the gym each day, but one Connecticut gym’s attempt to convince their clients to come back has seriously backfired.
A woman named Mora Reinka recently shared the promotional email she got from a Connecticut location of Anytime Fitness, in which they basically tried to fat-shame her to come back to their location. The message started out innocently enough, reading,
“Mora, I need you to do me a favor. Be comfortable in your skin this summer. Think about the warm days of summer ahead. Warm summer night breezes. Lake or beach time.”
But then things took a turn, reminding her of the
“LOTS of pictures of you that will be posted online forever. LOTS of sucking in, side turns, skinny arm posts, and God forbid, a side [picture] while sitting down,”
“Do me a second favor: Take your hand, and grab the excess you have on your waist (front/back/sides). Can you pinch it? Or can you grab it? Well, I want to call it what it is…FAT.”
Reinka, who belonged to Anytime Fitness in the past, said she was “horrified” by the email, with most folks agreeing, calling it “heartbreaking,” and one person noting, “It’s like an eating disorder sent out an email.”
The company said they were “appalled” by the “insensitive email,” which apparently came from the owner of the specific location in Manchester, adding,
“The message was the polar opposite of how we coach our franchisees to communicate with the public.”
They said they contacted the manager and he apologized, with the company sending out personal apologizes to anyone who received the email.
