After putting it off for three weeks, I finally washed my windows over the weekend...and it actually did put me in a good mood! It's like the sun is actually making it into my house now. Plus, it was the final big task to complete for spring cleaning. Days later, I'm still feeling accomplished!

Feeling like you need a little pick-me-up? Forget retail therapy, just doing some chores around the house can help boost your mood. A new survey from the UK finds that 86.4% of folks say cleaning their home helps make them feel better.

If you’re not one of those who enjoys housework, it may be hard to understand, but some people really find dusting or folding laundry soothing. Cleaning and organizing have been found to reduce stress, improve productivity and clear the mind, so get out the vacuum for some self-care. The survey finds that the top mood-boosting chore is de-cluttering (39%), followed closely by mowing the yard and recycling. And get this - according to this research, 54% of those surveyed say they’d rather spend a Friday night at home cleaning instead of going out.

The top mood-boosting household tasks are:

  • De-cluttering
  • Mowing the yard
  • Recycling
