Are you someone who just doesn’t understand everyone’s fascination with wine? Well, it could be that you’re just not old enough to appreciate it.

A new study finds that the average American’s “wine awakening,” meaning their ability to truly appreciate a good bottle of wine, doesn’t come until they are 29. As for how folks get into wine, most were influenced by a friend (30%), while 21% discovered it on their own and 17% got into wine thanks to a partner.

The survey also finds the average American can easily name four types of wine, with the most popular being chardonnay (69%), merlot (62%) and rosé (58%). Millennials are actually able to name the most varietals (five) as compared to those 55 and older (three).

As for the wine most likely to first spark someone’s interest, zinfandel was the top choice (17%), although in general, chardonnay is the one that Americans drink most frequently. And when it comes to overall consumption, most Americans will drink two glasses a night, two nights a week, although 23% of folks say they drinks a glass of wine four or more nights a week.
