Children get to see "behind the scenes" at Shenandoah County Fair

This week is not only the Shenandoah County Fair, but also a "Fair Week Fun" camp for children.

Kids ages 5-8 got a three day behind the scenes look at what goes on at the fair.

The camp is put on in collaboration with the Shenandoah County Cooperative Extension and the local 4-H Club. The camp gives kids a behind-the-scenes look at the fair so they can learn what goes on.

Kids ages five to eight are participating in the three-day camp.

Carol Nansel, who works for the Cooperative Extension in Shenandoah County, said on Tuesday they got to see what goes on at a livestock show and how those involved prepare for them.

"Here, they're actually going to get a chance to see and touch and learn about the animals and talk to the kids who are exhibiting the animals," said Nansel.

The goal of the camp is to educate the kids about agriculture and things they may not be exposed to otherwise.

Hope Matthews, who is the Cloverbud leader with 4-H, said the kids were surprised when they learned about the difference between hay and straw.

"Children aren't naturally taught some of that, unless they are born on a farm, and have that experience with horses," said Matthews.

4-H camp counselors and FFA Members from North Fork Middle School are also helping out with the camp this week. The last day for the camp is on Wednesday.
