Thomas Rhett has shared that he’s experiencing significant hearing loss in one ear — a change that has already led him to begin using hearing aids.
During an appearance on Annie F. Downs’ That Sounds Fun podcast, the country star revealed he’s been “kind of going deaf” in his left ear and sought hearing assistance at age 35 to restore clarity. He said wearing the devices dramatically altered how he experiences everyday sound.
After about a week of use, Rhett turned to his wife, Lauren Akins, and asked if what he was hearing through the aids was truly what the world sounds like to her. The sudden jump in volume and detail felt overwhelming to him — something Akins jokingly affirmed, telling him it was simply normal hearing.
Rhett indicated he’s currently using aids in both ears, likely to balance sound levels, even though the primary loss is on the left side. The adjustment has given him a new perspective on hearing and sound, particularly as someone whose career depends on music.
