As Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman move through the end of their nearly two-decade marriage, the country star’s music is reflecting the changes.
During a recent tour stop, Urban altered the lyrics of “The Fighter,” a song he previously said was inspired by Kidman, to reference his tourmate Maggie Baugh. Instead of singing “When they’re tryna get to you, baby I’ll be the fighter,” Urban switched the line to “When they’re tryna get to you, Maggie I’ll be your guitar player.”
The moment, captured by Baugh and shared on Instagram September 27, quickly sparked attention online. Just two days later, news broke that Urban and Kidman had separated after 19 years of marriage, with Billboard confirming the split. Kidman formally filed for divorce on September 30, citing irreconcilable differences.
“The Fighter,” originally released with Carrie Underwood in 2017, was once described by Urban as a vow to Kidman during a difficult time in their relationship. Now, the lyric change has taken on new meaning as Urban embraces both musical collaboration and personal transition.
The pair, who first began dating in 2005 and married the following year, share two teenage daughters.
