Keith Urban has revealed that early in his career, he was “willing to do anything” to get his music noticed—including posing nearly nude for Playgirl magazine.
In a candid interview with Rob Lowe on the Literally! With Rob Lowe podcast, Urban shared how the idea came about in 2001. A record company executive suggested doing a feature in Playgirl to promote his debut album, casually mentioning a photo shoot that involved him posing nude with just a guitar.
“It was a guy at my record company who said, ‘Hey, we can do this article in Playgirl, and they’ll do a big, long, nice piece on the record,’” Keith recalled. “I was like, ‘Great!’ Then he said, ‘And then we’ll go to a photo shoot too.’”
Though initially hesitant, Keith joked that being a guitarist helped him during the shoot. “Luckily, I play guitar and not harmonica,” he quipped, referring to using the instrument to cover himself.
Rob Lowe laughed, “So you at least knew what you were getting into by the time you got to the shoot.”
“Oh my God, yeah,” Keith said. “Apparently willing to do anything to get going!”
