Taylor Jenkins Reid might be turning The Chicks’ hit “Goodbye Earl” into a full-on musical — and not just any musical, but a jukebox one packed with songs from across the band’s entire discography.

Reid, who’s best known for writing bestselling novels like Daisy Jones & the SixMalibu RisingThe Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, and Carrie Soto Is Back, teased the news during a stop on The Kelly Clarkson Show while promoting her latest book, Atmosphere.

During the interview, Reid casually revealed, “We’re taking the story of ‘Goodbye Earl’ and building a jukebox musical around it.”

For anyone who doesn’t know, a jukebox musical uses existing songs (instead of writing new ones), which means fans of The Chicks could hear a bunch of their favorites if the show makes it to the stage.

Reid explained that the idea came to her a couple of years ago while she was seeing Moulin Rouge on Broadway with one of her best friends, who also happens to work in the theater world. Right before the show started, she turned to her friend and said, “What if we did a ‘Goodbye Earl’ musical?” Her friend asked, “What’s the second act?” and Reid realized she might need help actually fleshing it out.

From there, the two started reaching out to people in Hollywood who might have connections to The Chicks, and slowly the idea began to turn into something real.

So far, there’s no official title or release date for the musical, and not much is known about what the storyline will include — but we do know at least one more song that made the cut. Kelly Clarkson, who’s a big fan of The Chicks, asked if “Cowboy Take Me Away” would be featured.

Reid’s answer? “Let me assure you that it does.”
