Want to Be a Firefighter for a Day? HFD’s Community Academy Returns In May

The Harrisonburg Fire Department is now taking applications for its 2025 Community Fire Academy — a free, hands-on program that gives locals a unique look into the world of firefighting.

Open to anyone 18 or older living in Harrisonburg or Rockingham County, the academy lets participants explore fire stations, try out CPR, learn how to use a fire extinguisher, and even gear up like a firefighter. One of the most exciting parts? Getting to ride along in a fire engine for a real-time glimpse into daily life at HFD.

While priority is given to Harrisonburg residents, those from nearby areas are welcome to apply if space is available.

“This is a great way to connect with people in our community we wouldn’t usually get to meet,” said Lt. Erin Stehle, the department’s public education officer. She added that past classes have included everyone from city council members to local business owners — and a few participants have even gone on to become firefighters themselves.

Modeled after citizen police academies, this six-week program focuses on fire and rescue services. It starts May 7 and runs through June 11, with classes held every Wednesday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. Applications are due by May 2 and can be submitted through the city’s website.
