The Oregon Department of Transportation has started a new campaign to reach distracted drivers. “Messages from Mom” is using sayings you’d hear from your dear old mother to remind those behind the wheel to focus on the road.
Some of the messages they’re posting on highway signs include:
- “Put the phone away, I’m going to count to three”
- “Don’t text and drive … and eat your vegetables”
- “Drop the phone - because I said so that’s why”
They’re all signed by “mom.” Gary Leaming with Oregon’s DOT says they’re trying to find the messages that work best at getting drivers to change unsafe behavior.
"We're really targeting them in an area that they're using the devices,” he explains. “Versus an advertising campaign that would cost money, these are basically free message boards.”
