Survey Reveals Widespread Hoarding Tendencies Among Americans

Many of us have seen TV shows featuring extreme hoarders, but a recent survey reveals that a significant number of Americans engage in hoarding to some extent.

  • 50% of people admit to having at least one room in their home that’s “unsalvageable” due to clutter.
  • 34% feel their home is “cramped.”
  • 55% wish they didn’t have to part with items to create more space.
  • On average, people wish they had three additional rooms in their home.

When asked about the hardest items to purge, those with hoarding tendencies identified the following:

  1. Clothes
  2. Kitchen equipment (appliances, dishware, gadgets)
  3. Hobby items
  4. Shoes
  5. Groceries/food items
  6. Furniture
  7. Seasonal décor (which takes up space for most of the year)
  8. Memorabilia
  9. Random/one-off items (you know what I mean if you look around your house)
  10. Books
