Five Things Police Officers Want You to Know

These simple actions can make interactions with law enforcement smoother and safer for everyone.

  1. Promptly Pull Over: When you see those flashing lights in your rearview mirror, don’t hesitate. It’s likely they’re pulling you over. Use your turn signal and pull over safely. Waiting won’t change their mind.
  2. Stay in Your Vehicle: Remain seated and wait for instructions. If it’s nighttime, turn on your dome light. And yes, I’ll say it: Turn off your radio.
  3. Hands Visible: Place both hands on top of your steering wheel. Keep them there as the officer approaches your window. Transparency is key.
  4. Wait for Their Cue: Don’t reach for anything until asked. Whether it’s your license in your purse or registration in the glovebox, hold off until they request it. Patience pays off.
  5. Stay Calm: Feeling nervous is natural, but don’t panic. Be polite and avoid arguing. Rudeness won’t help, but kindness just might.
